Popular Camera App 'Halide' Gains Portrait Mode Support, New Depth Effects

Popular camera app Halide, which provides iPhone users with more control when taking pictures with their iPhones, today received a major update that introduces several new features.

Photos with Portrait effects are now available in the Halide app, with Halide incorporating a mix of smart facial detection and point of interest detection to create Portrait mode photos with background blur effects.

Portrait Mode is combined with a new "Depth Peaking" feature that's designed to show an outline of the camera's 3D space when capturing a photo that uses depth effects. A new Portrait Preview mode will also show a preview of what Portrait effects will look like when turned on.

All depth-enabled photos captured with Halide can be viewed using a new 3D photo viewer, allowing users to "walk around and through" captured scenes to see depth in a new way.

On the iPhone X, Halide now offers support for the front-facing TrueDepth camera, offering a new set of depth tools for taking selfies with Portrait effects within the Halide app. The front-facing camera also supports Depth Peaking and can allow users to export depth maps to be loaded in other image editors.

In addition to these new features, Halide 1.7 offers faster photo capture times, better responsiveness, and a quicker startup time, along with new design features and support for opening photos in the Darkroom photo editing app with a single touch.

Yes I do, I'm a programmer myself. And while it's totally acceptable to post "preview" articles like macrumors does and I most certainly welcome them, very much enjoy their content. The article makes it seem like this is already available. This is why I posted what I posted.

In a few days anyone who reads the article will see it was posted on the day the new update was released. MacRumors and all the other sites have posted about the new version, which I also am very much looking forward to using.

BTW, have you heard the WWDC keynotes in June where they tell us about the new iOS that is expected in about three months by saying, "Messages now has this new feature", when we won't see it for a quarter of a year!!! I find it annoying in a somewhat funny manner.

While typing this, I've updated my Updates section on my iPhone three times and Halide's new version is still not out yet.

Yeah and it’s been more than “a few hours”. I’m curious, did MacRumors publish this on their own or based off a press release from Halide? Because Halide has had an article on version 1.7 on their blog for about a week or so. MacStories has an article too (though the two blogs are unrelated).

I checked out the HalideCamera twitter feed, they are waiting as (im)patiently as are the rest of us. Halide is speculating an issue with the App Store servers- major pipe clog, but no definitive word on when we will be getting it.

Halide did post the release on Twitter this morning, but it can be a challenge when having to coordinate the announcement with an App Store server push/update! Not the first and not the last update that didn't work as planned.

What’s the frame rate capture of photos with depth data? 1/20, 1/50, 1/200?
