Earth (for now)
For my primary Apple TV system, I have a 2022 model Apple TV 4K (3rd generation). Over the past half a year or so, I have noticed some sparkles and occasional blackouts when using that unit (but not with other 4K devices). I tried swapping ports on the receiver (both input and output HDMI ports) and switching to a different HDMI port on the TV, and also bought new 4K Ultra HD certified HDMI cables to try with all those HDMI ports. Same results.

Finally, I swapped in my old 2017 model Apple TV 4K (1st generation). The problems are now gone. So, it seems the actual source of the problem is the Apple TV 4K box. Anyone else here experienced this problem? I assume the only real way to fix this is to replace the unit, unless someone tells me otherwise.

The old 2017 model works fine but the interface is slow and stuttery. However, I will keep using it until Apple releases a new model with A17 Pro or whatever. I guess the added benefit it is that it would likely support hardware decoding for both VP9 and AV1. Maybe it will get more memory too.

Sounds like you did the proper troubleshooting to narrow down the issue.

I’m assuming it’s always kept up with the latest updates.

I’d probably do the same thing in terms of buying a new one, although if there isn’t a new one announced or launched by the end of November I’d suspect there won’t be one for another year and I’d go ahead and get one this year around Christmas.

The problematic Apple TV 4K (2022) box is running tvOS 26 beta but it had the same issues on tvOS 18. Also my old 2017 model I’m using right now is also on tvOS 26 beta, working fine.

That is something I did not do, as I wouldn’t be using it that way with this system. It’s a good thought for another system though.

Actually I’d suggest that’s important period. It might show if there’s an issue with appletv units and your receiver in general. Shouldn’t be but possible.

The 3rd generation Apple TV seems to work on a different system, but I don't use it much and for extended periods, so I'm not 100% sure it wouldn't eventually do the same thing on that one.

I have been having issues with my ATV4K3, graphical issues in 4K with anything above 25Hz. I can turn it to 1080p, and no issues.

I used to have it set to 4K Dolby Vision at 60Hz, but it has crazy graphical glitches, like artifacts, setting it down to 50Hz, it looks better 60Hz, but still really bad. Dropping it down to 30Hz is a lot better, but still very distracting. 25Hz, it is good, no issues, except you can tell you are at 25Hz. 24Hz is good too.

Turn it to 1080p, and it looks great with DV and 60Hz.

I use a high speed cable, but it is now a few years old, maybe it broke. I plan on testing it at some point.

Another issue that I thought might be causing the issue is the passive-cooled A15 in the ATV4K3 thermal throttles really bad with games and Plex. I use Plex a lot, and I occasionally game, my daughter plays games a lot on it.

Wonder if the constant heat may have damaged it. I have an active-cooled heatsink that I keep on top of the ATV4K, but only use it on certain games. The ATV4K1 and ATV4K2 have active-cooling, so they don't have this issue.

My ATV 4K gen 1 is still working fine, using the same settings (Dolby Vision 60 Hz) and HDMI cables (from ATV to receiver and from receiver to TV) as my ATV 4K gen 3 which had the HDMI connectivity problems. Whereas the gen 3 had recurrent intermittent problems, the gen 1 has been rock solid.

However, given that the ATV 4K gen 1 is a 32 GB model, I had actually run out of storage recently. I didn't actually know what was happening but some of the apps weren't working. I looked it up online and it told me it was due to insufficient storage, but tvOS doesn't actually tell you that. I ended up deleting a whole bunch of stuff to free up space, mostly screensavers and games, and now everything works fine (aside from the fact that the gen 1 interface occasionally lags, whereas the gen 3 interface was more consistent).

Too bad, since my gen 3 is a 128 GB model, but its specs are being wasted on a secondary TV which doesn't see much use.

Definitely try new cables. I hope that solves it for you (but didn't for me).
