I have a late 2013 13" MBP I bought used recently, and the Thunderbolt ports give a snowy picture when I bump the cable. One port works OK (especially once I reset the SMC, bizarrely), but the other is basically useless. I was checking out a 2015 13" MBP earlier on craigslist, the guy swears they never used the ports (they looked quite clean), and yet it had the exact same issue. Same cables (I tried multiple) work fine on my old 2010 Macbook and on my Thinkpad. What's up with this? How durable are the USB-C ports on the 2016+ by comparison?

I should note that I'm a college student and I carry my laptop everywhere. Stuff needs to be durable.
