Portable Hard Drive "Not Ejected Properly" When Mac Sleeps

I have a brand new Seagate portable external hard drive for my Macbook Pro. My issue is that if the drive is attached to my Macbook Pro and it goes to sleep, I get a "Disk not ejected properly" warning.

This concerns me because I am worried that this will cause me to lose my data on the drive. (Yes I do back up the drive)

Is there a way to get my Mac to ejected the drive before sleeping?
