I just got the new 13" macbook pro base model, and im sure i'll run out of room soon. what is the best portable hard drive for someone who listens to a ton of music, takes tons of pictures, rips a lot of videos, and makes videos for under $150?

Or should i just grab a larger hard drive for my mac?

the iomega heliums ones look pretty sick. They are aluminum i believe.

The outer part looks pretty cool, but it's not aluminum, just shiny plastic. The important part is that the actual hard drives are low-end hard drives. I recommend the new Seagate FreeAgent Go's, which comes in many different colors. It's real aluminum and it doesn't get hot that often. It's pretty quiet and are great quality.

I'm sitting next to one right now, it's quite tiny and quiet and all of the other things one would want.

+1 for WD passport (studio if you can find one cheapish).

If that's out of your price range, I vote for a 500gb freeagent go which have cropped up on here under $100

I was looking at newegg for hard drives as well. Should I just grab a scorpio blue/black or a portable drive?

I love my Scorpio Blue

You could also put the Blue in your own inexpensive enclosure and have it as your portable drive

For external, I have the Free Agent using Firewire.
For internal, I have the WD Scorpio Blue.

I am very pleased with both!!

Boy - that's like asking if you should get a Chevy or a Ford... LoL.
Either way, the best part is you have a few good choices that are sub $150.
My personal favorite for Macs are Lacie drives. They use Seagate drives within. IMO you should be good with either Seagate or WD. In the end, it's about looks, price and warranty. One thing about drives is no matter what the brand, they all die. They have moving parts. Well, except SSD.
