Before my Macbook Pro and had a HP. I have all my files from my HP on a portable harddrive that I have been using like a flash drive just dragging and dropping the files I want on it instead of it automatically updating everything. My question is if I plug it into my mac will it be fine? Will I be able to transfer the files over to my mac. I just want to make sure it wont clear my portable hard drive and I loose everything.

You won't lose anything, if it's FAT formatted you'll be fine, if it's NTSF you will be able to read the files, but you won't be able to write to it. Unless you install extra software, I've never tried to do it, but there are apps to allow you to write to NTSF.
