In your basement
Hello everyone,

I've been lurking on these forums for a while now and I do enjoy reading a lot of the posts here. However, I had recently run into a bit of a problem (which I have since solved) concerning the operation of an external HDD that I bought over the internet.

The USB HDD was essentially not hotswappable, i.e. I could not detect the HDD without a reboot. The whole point of an external portable hdd being that i could plug it and play, this was quite an annoying problem, and after going on google I couldn't find a solution.

However in my quest for a solution, I stumbled upon Western Digital's website concerning the jumper settings for the drive. So I opened up my case, and it was on default...but here's the kicker, when i switched it to a mode called "low power up spin" (or something to that effect), the HDD would become hotswappable! Huzzah! Success!

Anyways, just wanted to share this story in case someone gets into the same trouble as I did. If there is a more elegant solution to the problem please let me know?

Thanks :)
