I have been with AT&T for several years and decided to switch to Verizon due to their LTE coverage and better service in my area.
Today, I picked up an iPhone 5 from the Verizon store and went with the default number until I could cancel my preordered AT&T iPhone ordered from Apple. Got home and realized my preorder with Apple for the AT&T phone is now in "preparing for shipment" mode, so I can no longer cancel my order.
Does this mean I'll have to wait to receive the AT&T phone, return it, and then port my number over, or is it possible to go ahead and port my number to Verizon before I receive the AT&T phone and then have them just change the AT&T number to a random default number while waiting to get the phone and return it and pay my ETF? Wasn't sure how that worked...
Right now I have call forwarding set up on my iPhone 4S to forward all calls to my iPhone 5, so really the only thing I'm missing is text messages from my regular number. If I can't port until after receiving and returning the AT&T phone to the Apple store, is there a way to set up my text messages so they are also forwarded to the new phone?
