Hello all,

I would like to switch my wife and I from AT&T to Verizon, and port our existing phone numbers over to new Verizon phones.

I will most likely (if there are no deal breaking issues that come out of the reviews!) order 2 iPhone X’s from Verizon’s website. I know that at the time of ordering on their site, it prompts you to enter the number(s) that you want to port over.

My question is, once I enter our numbers to be ported, and initiate the order, at what point does the transfer process begin? If after placing the order, it takes a few weeks (or longer) for the phones to get to us, will our existing AT&T service still work? I want to ensure that our AT&T service is unaffected until we activate the new Verizon phones.

Thanks!

I'd recommend one of the following two options:

1. If your current AT&T phones can work on Verizon, port over now and have the account already established/ready to go.

2. Open a new Verizon account with new phone numbers, then port your numbers over after you receive the new phones.

Isn't this a common scenario though? I mean, when you order a phone online, it will take a few days to get to you. Surely the number transfer doesn't happen until you activate the new phone, right?

I recently switched to Verizon from AT&T. I ported the number the day that I activated the new phone. I didn’t indicate that I was porting a number during the phone ordering process though. Your AT&T phone will work until you actually call in to port and activate the new phone. By the way the porting process took 10 mins from start to finish.

So I can simply order the new phones from Verizon's website as a new customer, and then when they arrive in the mail, I call them and tell them that I want to port my existing AT&T numbers?

Yes, that’s exactly what I did. Make sure to have your AT&T acctount number and PIN number, if you have one. Good luck!

Yes you can call in, otherwise it looks like you can do it online if you'd prefer that.

Question 3: How do I port a phone number from another service provider to replace my current Verizon Wireless phone number?

To replace your existing Verizon Wireless number with a phone number from another provider:

Note: You can't replace an existing prepaid number with a ported number. You can only port when activating a new prepaid account.

  1. Go to the Change Mobile Number page in My Verizon.

  2. Select the mobile number you want to replace and click Next.

  3. Select Port an existing number.

  4. Enter the required information for porting your number and click Next.

  5. Follow the prompts to confirm the mobile number change.
You've successfully ported a number to replace your current Verizon Wireless phone number.

We went through this when we bought our new 8's. Our only hold up was providing Verizon with our AT&T security pin and password. But once we got that figured out it went through fine. Our existing phones continued to work on AT&T until the new phones where setup via iTunes. Then the old ones went offline and the new ones worked on Verizon. Pretty seamless process overall.
