iPhone 11 Pro Portrait mode: Does it require less distance to the subject now?

Hey, quick question:
Does the portrait mode in wide angle mode now require less distance to the subject?

I still think Apple has some work to do on the portrait mode. I am still getting the "move farther away ...." message. I use my phone to shoot small products and it cannot shoot a clear wine glass without blurring around the rim ... just like the Xs did. I was hoping for an improvement and so far, no improvement at all.
