Both my wife and I got the new iPhone 13 Pro (128GB) on Friday and my phone is exhibiting weird portrait mode issues.

The first one is, using the rear cameras, portrait mode fails to detect faces and thus doesn't get a "lock" on a face, to activate portrait mode. If I use my wife's phone, it works fine - as expected. Swap to my phone in same place and no-go. I've found a strange work-around, which is to completely cover the cameras for 10 seconds until the "Natural lighting" text turns yellow (with black screen). I then uncover the lenses and portrait mode works. But If I don't do this weird dance, it never locks onto faces.

The other issue is with the front camera, again with portrait mode. It always displays "Move further away" even when I place my phone on the table and move 3+ meters away. Covering camera does not help in this case - it never activates portrait mode.

It seems like a software issue, as both front and rear cameras are affected. I've done numerous phone restarts/powering off & on but it hasn't helped. I'm tempted to do a full restore but not tried it yet as its a pain.

Any other suggestions?

Did a hard reset (phone off, press and release volume up, press & release volume down, press & hold power until phone reboots and apple logo appears) - did not work.

Did a full wipe of phone - "erase all contents and settings". Setup as new phone (all default settings, did not login with Apple ID). Camera still can't take portrait photos.

Seems pretty conclusive that it is some sort of hardware issue after all. Booked a Genius Bar reservation for Thursday.
