I use Portrait Mode for video calls on my Mac. Works fine in Teams and Zoom apps but not in Google Meet via Safari.

When I check Control Center with Meet video on, Portrait Mode shows as on but the video feed doesn't show it applied. Toggling Portrait Mode off and back on again doesn't fix. Meet's own visual effects aren't supported in Safari, so my workaround right now is to use Chrome.

All of this is the same whether I use my Studio Display or MacBook Air camera.

Given Safari is my primary browser and I'd rather not use Chrome, does anyone have any ideas on how to get a blurred background in Meet on Safari?

According to this article, it is possible to use Blur Background in Google Meet with Safari.

https://www.alphr.com/blur-background-google-meet/

You have to enable it within Google Meet each time you start a meeting, so I don't think the setting on Control Center will have any effect.
Thanks, I saw that one too. When I click on it, I get a message saying browser isn’t supported (which is why I then tried it through Control Center)

Did you try the browser version checker that the article links to? What version of MacOS are you running?
I'm running the most recent non-beta builds of macOS (Monterey 12.5) and Safari (15.6).

I just tried the browser checker (didn't appreciate the fact that an account needed to be set up, almost made it seem like you work for that company!) but it's not clear how to use it. That said, while I found this checker from the Google support page, this support page makes clear that this background effects are only possible on Chrome or Edge. Bummer, as more people seem to be sending me Meet links these days...

Our company switched to Google Mail and other services for about a year and it was absolutely awful. Google Mail in particular did all sorts of things to my messages automatically to "help" me, but all it did was confuse and confound me. Fortunately, we merged with another company about a year ago and switched back to a Microsoft ecosystem. Now mail is just mail and doesn't do anything fancy for me, which is just fine by me.

yes i experience the same issue on different websites on safari on my ipad ios 16... portait mode is not working in safari

I use Google Meet a fair bit on my work Mac, and just bite the bullet and run it in Chrome so I can get the portrait mode effect.

One other possibility: if you have Ventura and use your iPhone's camera via Continuity Camera, I wonder if that would sidestep the issue...

You can try using a virtual camera to bypass portrait mode to Google Meet in Safari.

- download and install one of the Mac virtual camera apps
- make sure your virtual camera is selected as your Camera in Google Meet video settings
- open the Control Centre in the Mac Menu Bar
- select Video Effects -> (pick your virtual camera) -> Portrait
- enjoy Portrait Mode
