A bigger hard drive is much cheaper than a new computer.

But a bigger hard drive requires that you either keep your computer powered on to share its content or that you lug around the house from computer to computer.

I got a home NAS solution (QNAP TS 209 Pro) and I haven't looked back since. All my videos/music is available everywhere in the house, and since me and my girlfriend use laptops exclusively, I don't need to keep anything but the QNAP powered up.

As it is, we only need the computer's hard drive to install applications on and for temporary data that we need to drag along outside the house. Everything else is stored on the NAS.

I don't think there is any technical reason that apple can't offer this functionality with the time capsule and the base station.

Except to sell another product.

whats so hard about plugging your exteranl HD into an AEBS and accessing it from anywhere in your network??

It seems to work just fine with access speeds that will work for most users
