Hi all,

Apologies if this is an obvious question. Would Tiger or Leopard on Intel be able to cross compile TenFourFox for PowerPC using the G4 and G5 .mozconfigs?

If so, it could be possible to set up an Intel Hackintosh for those systems in something like KVM and give more computing resources. It would also remove the need for the original hardware to do the builds.

Thanks

It should be possible, but I don't think anybody has actually done it yet. The most sure fire way to get a good working build is via the actual hardware though. Sure, it takes longer, but it works without jumping through hoops. The biggest hurdle is lack of ram on some devices. Unlike linux, I don't think there is an easy way to let osx use a swap partition or swap file. My g4 mini is stuck at 1gb ram, but under Linux with a 2gb swap file has no issue building arctic fox. It just takes 7-10 hours to do.

Cheers

OS X's swap file is stored in /private/var/vm/. It should be used automatically. (I don't doubt that low memory is causing issues, but it's not because OS X doesn't have the ability to swap.)

Easiest thing is to use a VM. I've had the most success with VMWare.

(Hackintosh is a little difficult because, in the general case, you need to use an Intel CPU of the generation that was current when your version of OS X was released.)

Or just slap Tiger on an 8-core Mac Pro (2,1/3,1) and fire up da compilah. :)

If I can get it going in a VM and have it still be faster than a G5 quad, I can spin them up and down as needed on my server hardware and in an automated fashion and save time compiling in the process. Two old Macs is enough for me.
