I am going to be taking a long road trip with the family. And the wife and i would love to not hear 'are we there yet' for the entire trip if possible.

I do not have a cellphone plan that allows hotspot sharing. so i wonder if it would be possible to setup a wired/wireless router, a laptop running itunes with an external drive full of my itunes movies with just local access? I have an inverter capable of powering a laptop and a router. So I wanted to setup iTunes with the eternal drive under one of the front seats. and use our iOS device to stream via homesharing.

is this possible with just a local network?

It will work. You just need to have all the devices connect to the homeshare at least once when connected to the internet. Also make sure you test it before starting your trip.

I'm guessing iTunes needs to connect to apple at least once to authenticate?
