Possible explanation for 17" PowerBook delay
Monday, February 17 2003 @ 3:29 PM CT | Article Link
One of our readers sent in the following information concerning the 17" PowerBook G4, which was originally slated to ship in February, but has now been pushed back to March or April:

"I spoke to someone who is close to inside people at Apple and I hear that the 17 inch PowerBook is not shipping because after using the first few ones that were around, the users found that the screen was not placed on a rigid enough backing (the top of the PowerBook) and tended to crack. That could make sense considering the size of the screen and the Aluminum casing. I hear that they are trying to resolve the issue and that is what is holding the shipments back."

ouch that cant be good. march i can understand but i hope its not all the way into april.

u wish!

I think the 17" powerbook is just plain false advertising! It should be in the next IBM commercial along with the pixy dust and genie bottle. There is no 17" powerbook.

grimmace you troll.

go read slashdot.org

i doubt this explanation though. unless apple has the worst design dept of all time! this is an obvious thing...

"let's see if it is usable before we anounce it..."

I can't read. :D That's what the commercials are for.

This sounds like somthing that would be of concern to the designers in the first place.

Being as that WOULD be the main concern of increasing the size of the screen. And the designers would have it thought through before it ever was announced. Worst thing that can happen is that 1/2 of your screens break at macworld. Nobody would buy the machine.

Most likely somebody just thought this up, and thought it might be a reason, I wouldnt give it any credability at all.

I was in the Apple Store in Indianapolis on Sunday. The guys there were pretty confident they would see the 17" Powerbooks by the end of the month, but also admitted Apple doesn't tell them anything either! It was amazing to just stand there and listen. About every other person walking through the door asked about the 17" PB's!
