Possible for only iPhone itself to ring when AirPods are connected?

Before I buy AirPods, I would like to ensure that it’s possible for only the phone itself to ring when AirPods are connected, such as when I fall asleep. Should I get a call in the middle of the night I want only the phone to ring loudly, even if the AirPods are still in one ear as I fall asleep with it.

Since I know it’s possible to have the call ring and be announced through the AirPods, I just want to ensure this alternate functionality exists.
