I think I found a way to 'trick your mac into doing what you want'. Its a pretty weak solution but its working for me at the moment, at least enough to listen to my shared music on the network. But no way ideal.
If someone could reply after trying this and say if it worked for them or not.
I was able to connect to my network before but could not see any files on the network after logging in.
Anyway, connect to the network, put in your username and password providing you need one. network connects, your root folder appears, but you can't see any files when you click into it. Close your macbook lid down(maybe it works by putting an imac into sleep?), wait 30secs and start up again. Folders appear. Also, the folders that appear for me are ones I already had shortcuts too, not sure if thats another issue.
