I tried posting this in one of the subforums but didn't get much in the way of responses...

Is it possible to use the iP4 as a go phone? If so how? Wondering if I can go out and get a gophone, cut the sim down, slide it into the iphone and activate it from home.

backstory - girlfriend got an iP4 then went on an overseas assignment and put her account on military suspend. Now she's been removed from the facetime servers...we just want a way to get her phone back on the network even though she'll be using it in airplane mode w/ wifi on for facetime.

Tell her to check if her local exchange (PX) offers overseas SIM cards on the local networks. She can purchase one for her iPhone with a plan and have her phone working again. Just make sure she reads the fine print and only gets what she needs. Those guys try to upsell. If she is in Japan I know this works from experience.

the phone is locked to AT&T though right? i was under the impression she couldn't get a sim card for local networks without going through an unlock process.

As long as the SIM works then facetime will work. As far as I know all facetime does is send a text message when connecting so this is all thats required.
Im in the UK so I have a factory unlocked iPhone direct from Apple, I can facetime on my Orange SIM card and my o2 SIM card as well.

As for the actual SIM you use, you should have no problems cutting down a gophone SIM and using it. As various threads tell you, the contacts on the SIM are the same as a microSIM so it's just a matter of cutting it properly.
This is how I use my o2 and Orange SIM in my iPhone and I have an adapter to use it in any other phone.

ok thanks - just got a pay as you go sim card and cut it down to microsim size. Shipping out tomorrow...will update this thread in a week or two when she gets it!
