Hi guys,

Probably a stupid question so sorry for asking...but is it possible to preserve my current ip4 4.2.1 baseband and upgrade to 4.3 using tinyumbrella?
I don't care about the jailbreak atm, however i would like to preserve my bb for any future unlocks that might become available.

Thanks!

The 4.2.1 baseband cannot be unlocked either.
So when the next unlock comes it will work on the latest baseband.
No need to preserve a baseband that's not unlockable.
Now if you had 01.59.00 on your iphone 4 then I could see it.

What if the 4.2.1 BB is later found to have a vulnerability while the 4.3 BB still proves to be foolproof against unlocks? Wouldn't it be in his best interest to keep his older 4.2.1 BB just in case?

I was thinking that too..

Hence why i asked the question about preserving the BB, but i guess that got overlooked in the above answer :) ;)

Please clarify. My ip4 is on 01.59.00. Can I then use tinyumbrella to update and preserve the old baseband ?

Yeah. You can use tinyumbrella and keep your baseband at 1.59.00 and upgrade to 4.2.1 and jailbreak it. You could also go to 4.3 but that is only a tethered jailbreak currently. Google what a tethered jailbreak is if you're not sure what that means. Good luck!

I was more concerned with going to stock-like 4.3 and preserving an old baseband. The untethered jailbreak will come sooner or later. But an unlock might never come.

After seeing the tutorial below on iClarified, I'm just going to go back to waiting. It's scary to accidentally update my baseband.

If you get a 16XX error then try entering DFU and go to step 5.
If your restore does NOT end in a 1013, it means your baseband was updated. This is likely because you did not have the TSS server running OR you updated without TinyUmbrella OR you are working with a device OTHER than iPhone 4.

I chose the option to "upgrade" from within iTunes after opening TinyUmbrella in the background but NOT having the TSS server running. My baseband was not upgraded and remains at 02.10.4. I don't know if it's necessary to have TU running or to just have Saurik's server in your /etc/hosts file.

Was this while upgrading to 4.3?

Yes it's possible. I have been preserving my baseband at 1.59 On my iPhone 4 the entire time with tiny umbrella. Just load up tiny umbrella back up your shsh and then start tss server. Do a shift+restore in iTunes.

Doubt it.
But you never know.
Just to be sure I'd hold off upgrading yet and double check if TU supports 4.3 BB preservation on the i4.
Or follow what B.G said above since it worked out for him.
