Possible To Prevent Mac From Auto Detecting Changes In External Displays

I've searched the internet and can't seem to find what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd come to the wonderful MacRumors Forum in hope of finding an answer.

I'm looking to somehow prevent my Mac from auto detecting and refreshing output for an external display. I want to be able to disconnect an external display from my Mac without it flashing to the blue screen and resizing the output. Is this at all possible? Maybe by changing a preference from the command line?
