So it seems like iOS4.2.1 untethered for iPhone 4 is going to require 4.2b3 blobs. I have a new iPhone 4 so it has no blobs saved and it is on 4.1. I can't wait any longer so I've decided to jailbreak 4.1 and use it. My iPhone 4 is 4.1 but I want to format it at 4.1 so I can start fresh and jb it. Now if I use iTunes I can only update it to 4.2.1. Is there any way I can restore 4.1? Shift-restore work? Thanks.

But what if it's the same firmware I'm on? I'm on 4.1 currently so why can't I restore to 4.1?

When Apple releases say 4.2.1 they stop signing the older version 4.1 on their servers. So if you were to restore your iPhone your only choice would be the newest firmwares. It's Apple's way of preventing unlocks/jailbreaks.

The only way you can restore to the older iOS is by having the SHSH saved.
