Has anyone over the years ever reported if it’s possible to swap the thunderbolt cable inside the Apple Thunderbolt Display for a mini displayport cable and use this thing with traditional video cards? Not sure if the logicboard/thunderbolt controller will understand the displayport signal without Tb?

Is that the Thunderbolt input? You need to find the Thunderbolt controller where the DisplayPort side is generated. Cut that and place a Mini DisplayPort connector there. It's probably not as simple as that. Does the display have any buttons? It probably requires Thunderbolt to power-on etc.
