I know you weren't directing your question at me, but......
I have pretty much the same setup, and I don't find the iPad to be overkill. It's a good complimentary device.
Is it necessary? No, but I did buy it to replace a secondary laptop which I sold the same day (an iBook), and it has replaced the iBook's purposes quite well.
Not the person you were quoting but I now find the laptop to be overkill.
RDP'ing into my desktop takes care of things that are overkill for the iPad.
