I have a 2012 rMBP and am amazed at the battery life ..

just thinking, though, suppose I was to keep this for another couple of years .. and it does the 1000 cycles .. the battery would essentially die .. would I be able to get it replaced by Apple? .. [though I'm upgrading to the new MacBook Pro]

Yes. In 2 ways:

1) If you're still covered by Apple Care (a mid-2012 would be approaching the end of Apple Care this year) then demonstrate the end-of-life battery to Apple, and they'll replace it
2) In my situation, my old 2010 was out of warranty, but I left it with the Apple Store and they replaced it for ~$150 overnight
