Somewhere Back In The Long Ago
I'm interested to see what people are using. I'll kick this off with mine:

Imac 27" ( Won't post specs but maxed out 32GB RAM)

Software:

Logic X
Audacity for occasional SFX splitting

Hardware ( Pictured )
Novation SLK MKII
Yamaha USB Mixer / Input Board
Genelec Powered Studio Monitors
Asus BRD Writer
Segate 4TB USB 3 ( Storage )

Not Pictured:
Fender Stratocaster Vintage 1990 American, LSR
Martin D35
Fender Precision Pro American
Gibson SG Standard
Yamaha Compass Electro / Acoustic 12 String
Rode Pro Studio Microphones
Promise Pegasus R4

Am currently looking for a sound assistant...I have somebody coming today for a kind of informal interview....I can't manage everything by myself!

So what do you use, and how do you use it?

Nice setup, are you purely a keyboard player, or do you play guitar as well?

I'm by no means a professional or seasoned instrumentalist, but I do play both keyboard/piano and guitar, in addition to drums and percussion. As you can see my studio isn't a recording facility, it's more of a production and mixing space, so by having instruments and a great MIDI controller at hand the workflow never really slows down if cool ideas come up.

This is what I'm running atm, I'm much more of a hardware kinda guy really... :)

Protools 7.4
Reason 4 (via Rewire)

(on a side note, I have Reason 7, Logic Express, and MainStage 3 all running on my laptop which sometimes I will use via MIDI Networking)

Keys
Yammie Motif Classic 6
Yammie EX5
Korg MS2000BR

Channel Stuff
Alesis 3630 Stereo Compressors
Lexicon MX200 MFX
TC Electronics G-Sharp MFX
TL Audio Ivory 5001 Quad Pre

My mixing desk is a Yamaha MG14/2

Outta shot I have a Vox AD30VT, and a Fender Jazz, Squire Tele.

In the next year or two, imma ditch the mac mini (it will be my Media server) and the MBox 2, and go all out on making a more integrated solution with a MOTU 828x (not even released yet I don't think?! :S) and a coupla Octopre MKii. Will be putting everything in customed racks with patch on the back, so it can be modular to an extent. This will effectively get rid of the mixing desk, and plug everything directly into Protools/applicable DAW, to use for external processing.

I also have some Technic high quality hifi/cinema speakers in the attic which I will be either using as secondary monitors, or coupled with the mac mini in an alternative room powered by a 7.1 amp.

How do you find Ableton now? I had a free copy with my Novation, but found the interface was awful. Since I use Logic anyway, I ditched it, only keeping Automap which is useful.

I love it, always have. I skipped version 7, but have owned all other versions since 1.5.

But the Live 9 Suite is really extra nice. The thing that separates Ableton Live from other DAWs is the Session view, which I know some people can't get into, but it's incredibly powerful once you know how to work with it; it let's you play your DAW live, like an instrument and record the results into the Arrangement view (the traditional linear DAW view.) Coupled with the new Ableton Push, it is an incredibly powerful and intuitive combination; makes creating music a pure joy!

Some context with where I am coming from, so you know I'm not just an Ableton Fanboy: I started doing music back when you could only record onto reel-to-reel tape, and by the mid-2000s I was the Senior Audio Editor at AVID/M-Audio, so it was my day job to use Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, Acid, Ableton Live and other software (like Recycle for Rex files) to create and edit our sound libraries; but at the end of the day, with all of that experience, I went home to Ableton Live because it was fast and intuitive...

:) I'm from the same generation....Reel to reel, 4 and 8 track tape...How the heck did we ever get stuff done?:) I must be missing something with Ableton though...I find the menus badly organised and the interface a little "Childish" if that's the right word....I guess I'm so used to Logic now that I wouldn't want a change, but I got a discount voucher from them recently and I know I can try it again for free....Might give it another shot and see what's what.

I've got about 6 hours into ableton. Until I'm setup with my new band to do a live show, I probably won't spend more time in it.

It certainly is very, very powerful. I'm just set in my ways, I guess.

Heh, reels. I sure miss the 827's and the like, dolby SR is fantastic. Don't miss the price, though!

Need Advice

Sorry to jump in here, but I can't create a new thread, and it seems like there are a lot of people active in this thread who might be able to answer my question (and it seems like the original issue has been beaten to death...)

My 15 yr old seems to have a bit of talent for manipulation of digital files (audio/photo/video) as well as musical talent (plays electric guitar, electric bass, piano, and a bit of sax, plus is learning to work with a couple of DAWs), and is exploring the idea of a career in that direction. The problem is that nobody around us has any idea what that entails, where to go, what to do, who to talk to, etc.

I am looking for some advice, specific places to look (Google isn't helpful as it is a bit of information overload until I have more direction), and anything else that he might need to know.

Private message is fine

Thanks

Oh - also - does anyone have any experience with the Nektar p6? We were thinking of picking one up to use instead of the Roland digital piano (two younger sons aged 12 and 10 also both play both guitars and piano, and so they all want to be able to go out to community centres, retirement homes, etc and perform). They play everything from Stairway to Heaven to Sultans of Swing to Viva La Vida but don't have a drummer, so they need something that can add a drum track.

For reference, if it matters, we don't have a complex setup like most. It only consists of a Mac Mini with a TV for a monitor, Roland Digital Piano (?model), a Tascam USB/guitar interface, a Roland USB/Midi interface, and a bunch of reference speakers from our old home AV system.

Any guidance towards how to slowly build the system for them is also appreciated.

Thanks

My humble DAW.....

I was in PC world with a kick-ass machine, but grew tired of the crashes and whatnot that frustrated me to no end :(, then I scored a beefed-up 2007 24" iMac (6.1):D for practically pennies. 4GB RAM, external FW800 1TB HDD, OS X 10.7.5, Logic Pro 9, tons of soft-synth and effects plug-ins.
I know it doesn't compare to what some of you guys have posted Mac-wise, but, it's working quite nicely for me as it is and I got it at a steal price.

Audio interface is the Lexicon Omega,
ART DI/O A/D/A Tube-driven converter,
keyboard controller is the M-Audio Oxygen 61,
Monitors are Mackie MR5s and Audio-Technica M50 headphones fed from Focusrite VRM box, (and then there are Prodipe Pod3 desktop speakers... not bad for what they are...)
Hardware synths include the Alesis QS6 and QSR, and the Novation X-Station 25. Also there's the BOSS DR-660 drum machine.

I LOVE the iMac over the PC, in that it never crashes, is secure, seems faster, you guys know the tune.....

how to post images?

So, I'm in the process of upgrading my home studio, it should be really nice once we're done (in a week or two I'm hoping), and I'd love to post a picture of our new and improved setup :) However... this is a silly question... I don't know how to upload images onto these forums??
