Since the Apple tracking system (IMNSHO) sucks... Let's try to get more realistic estimates. Anyone with a Dual 2 Gig post their order date and estimated ship date. Then when you get your shipping confirmation, post a followup.

If enough people post, I will make up a table in order of order date. This way we can get a better feel for when they will come.

Skip any extras like monitors, as they will have little effect on ship dates.

Me:
1GB/250GB/No Airport/Bluetooth/No Modem

Order on:
09/24/2003
11:09 AM PST

is that it?

Jelloshot, you look to be next,
I need to add to the list that last saturday i configured an machine identical to the one I am waiting for, and they said 7-10 business days, which would be next wed. to friday for shipping. Obviously their tracking system needs help.

Personal Education Store Online CTO:
512MB RAM (why not buy cheaper elsewhere?)
250GB HD
Superdrive
9800 Pro
Modem (might come in handy for faxing)
No Bluetooth

Ordered 9/19, est. ship 10/27

This is sort of a pointless exercise, but it's fun anyway. It'll be intresting if there are enough responses to determine a method in Apple's madness.

Incidentally, the DVI-Video adapter and discount Final Cut Express I ordered with it shipped almost immediately.

Actually, i looked around at RAM prices, and there was not a significant difference at crucial.com, that I just went with the apple ram. I plan on getting more later, but 1 GB will hold me for a few months.

I really don't care about the est. ship date, since I think it is full of ****. I think the comparison of order date vs actual ship date will be helpful in getting an idea when my machine will ship.

Ordered on 8/27/03.
Estimated to ship on or before 10/10/03.
Shipped on 10/7/03.
Estimated to arrive on 10/14/03. =)

That's the way I see it as well; noting the estimated ship dates is if anything more for fun.

Sorry to get a bit off topic, but:

Really? So long as you don't intend to go above 4GB RAM any time soon (which I doubt I ever will, certainly not unless prices come way, way down), you can do a lot better:

Apple Personal Edu Prices:
Stock 512MB
1GB (+512MB) = +$225
2GB (+1.5GB) = +$945
4GB (+3.5GB) = +2115
8GB (+7.5GB) = +$4455

At Crucial.com:
256MB stick = $51.99
512MB stick = $92.99

so:
+512MB = $104 ($120 cheaper)
+1GB = $186 ($534 cheaper)
4GB (max possible with 512 chips, throwing out the stock RAM) = $744 ($1271 cheaper)

Apple's RAM isn't badly priced for 1GB sticks (OWC's a bit cheaper), but if you want to take a hit and just add 512MB sticks it's almost four times cheaper at Crucial ($186/GB instead of $720GB)

Frys in Sunnyvale

I was at the Frys in Sunnyvale this morning and there were atleast 6 DP 2Ghz boxes sitting in the Apple section.

That sucks for all the people waiting to be overcharged for Apple Ram while units sit on the floor @ a store....

Ack, I was looking at the price of "1 gig of ram from crucial) not thinking that it would have bought me a total of 1.5 Meg including the two apple 256M sticks.

Oh well, Glad I only get 1 Gig, and at least I won't have to eventually get rid of the 256M chips when I eventually max it out.

I think that the life time of the 2Gig G5 is great, since it will take at least 8 Gigs of ram. Eventually I expect to be able to put in a 500 GB or 1 TB sata drive in my second bay for a nice cheap price. Who knows what I can put in the pci-x slots.

Looking forward to my machine.

Education purchase

2 ghz DP
250 gb SATA
9800 pro

Ordered on: 10/11 (yay!)
Est. ship: 11/4

I wonder as of what date they'll start preloading with Panther. Oh well, at least I finally bit the bullet and ordered! :)

If there really is a shortage of 9800 pro cards, maybe ATI should hurry up and port the 9800 XT as well.

Wow, this is a FAST machine. =)

In theory it should be up to 10 times faster than my iBook/500, but it feels like even more of a difference than that sometimes!!!

Of course, I'm not even running Panther or apps compiled for the G5 yet...so it's not even a "fair" test yet. =)
