FW devices can be plugged in cascade mode: you'll have to plug your new HDD to the iMac, and your audio device to the hard drive. That's the reason why every firewire box has 2 (or more) fw ports and why FW hubs are so rare 😉

that would put added stress on the audio interface, no? as all requests have to go through it, rather then just the ones intended for it :\

on the side 3 power sockets, multicard reader and 7 USB ports, L and R audio input. and a phones output.
my setup in normal daylight.
its just a wood plate i painted green. to hide cables behind and strengthen the mounts.
i build it myself, as you can see in the above pictures it has som nifty things on/in it 😛
the light behind it are Ikea Dioders (if u look at the cable management picture u can see the LED strips.) might post a shot later.
yes it does, when you start transferring the sound just goes out. or gets delayed alot. i dont know of any audio interface that has dual FW ports for daisy linking...?

'Stress' doesn't come into it. I believe the hard drive will only send data when you're talking to it, whilst the audio interface will continually communicate with the Mac. Any devices which can 'interrupt' that continual flow of data, or affect it at all can cause issues.
Or so I've been lead to believe. Either way, I run a 56 channel audio interface and a FW800 drive all off my iMac's FW800 bus and it's never given me issues...

stefmesman, your setup is incredible! Not just because its very well designed, but because it looks like you're quite the handyman as well. Any details on how you integrated so many functions into the desk?

well yes of course, saturating a fw800 channel isn't very hard even with a single 7200rpm hard drive! So you would expect these things to freeze up under those circumstances.
56 channel audio? That has to be software based of course?! There is no way that hardware channels can support in such low bandwidths?

yup that would work for daisy chaining (aka daisy linking, or fw cascade mode 😛) you might need some fw400 to 800 adapters (if the hdd is 800). which would also explain the lag (half speed aka 400 plus daisy = 200.... true 800 plus daisy = 400) i think.

Nah it's 56 channels, and very low latency too:
RME Fireface 800
Add in extra DAC and ADCs (as I did) and you can get 56 channels of 24 bit audio running at 48kHz (although I run at 44.1). Channel count drops as you increase the sample rate (192kHz only allows 24I/O, 12 in and 12 out).
I was running 28 channels off one hard drive (for playback) and 28 channels recorded onto a different drive (the playback drive was admittedly on a USB bus).
FW800's throughput is quite impressive.

i am quite a handyman haha. the usb hub is connected with usb and has a build in card reader these i linked to an big AC powered USB (a 10 port) in teh back compartment in my desk, wich is attached to the imac. i can also plug in my keyboard there and other ''not much demanding'' usb devices. the audio inputs in the side come from the audio interface. i drilled holes and put in extention cables.
im still 19 and i work my ass off for my equipment. but i still live at my parents, so have not much more to show you then just my room. even though i did the room myself too (the painting and all the furniture build form scratch) still not finished need to re-do the ceiling and some other stuff.
im thinking of buying a logitech dinovo mac edition.
i have a 61 key. my desk is made out of MDF i dont know if thats the same in english though. be shure u put everything together as strong as possible.
i have the special edition KRK with silver wooffers, they used to sell a few like 2 years ago. they are pretty rare right now.

Bit of a noob question but I've always wondered how people manage to get the USB ports etc fitted into the desk. How did you do yours?
just buy a regular usb card reader remove the enclosure or paint it. the one i had was black. drilled a hole in the wood and and glue'd it in it. 🙂

75MB/s max roughly on FW800 - this allows for ~1.33MB/s per channel, including over head. yeh now that i think about it that allows enough for uncompressed audio to run through. uncompressed aiff channels only require ~150KB/s to run reliably. what sort of disk activity do you see when playing back that many channels?
