My wife has a iphone4 from AT&T, and won't be able to upgrade $199 until next March. If I buy a new iphone 4S next Friday, and join her as a family plan. How much will I pay for the iphone 4S? $199 or $449?
To add a new line then you should have the full upgrade discount price for the new line.
If you're talking about opening a new line on her plan, it will be 199 for you.
hmmm... We didn't get that. My wife's line is the main line and we are over $150/month, but her upgrade time is like 17 months (June 2010 to 11/2011) and it's still say +$250 for all of our 4 lines.
Full Discounts for me if I decide to upgrade which I may not

How do people get this? I bought mine on launch day and mine is Feb. 2012.
if youre the primary line in a family plan contract with a high enough monthly bill, a 1 year contract fulfillment is enough for you to upgrade again
... Bought iPhone 4 on launch day, bill is about ~180 every month i am the primary number and it says Nov. 25th... for full discount otherwise +$250

Yeah same here, my main company line is about $300/month with those global data and talk plans and such, but I'm saving that line for something better next year.
Can I just pre-order an iphone 4s tomorrow from Apple.com, after receiving it next Friday hopefully, just call AT&T to add an additional line to my wife's plan?
If you buy a phone without having a line on the account you'll pay full retail for it. I don't know if it lets you switch to a family plan when preordering, but you can probably just get a sim only line today and then preorder for that line when the preorders go up.
Got my iPhone 4 on launch day as well, but I paid $299 for the 32gb 4S. I even asked an AT&T rep about this. She told me there were 850 variables determining who gets an upgrade with payment time being one of the big ones. LOL, I had an overdue balance I had to take care of before I upgraded 2 days ago.
