So hey, all. When the 13 series was revealed, I knew I was going to upgrade from my SE 2020, and I knew I would do so after the holiday season. I was on the fence between the 13 mini and the 13 Pro (with the regular 13 unlikely but still under consideration). At issue was the telephoto lens. The mini's camera system would be a big improvement on my (essentially) iPhone 8 camera, but I know I would shoot in telephoto all the time, so I was leaning towards the Pro. The tradeoffs in my mind what you've read about many times: telephoto and macro vs. smaller and lighter. For a while I had a heavy coin taped to the back of my SE to simulate the weight difference. I was leaning strongly towards the 13 Pro.

(note: I am aware of the ongoing concern about the 13 Pro's telephoto issues and I think they are legit and part of the evaluation, but for this post I want to set those aside. Suffice it to say, the Pro was feeling like the "right" decision.)

But things changed last month: my partner and I were in a bad auto accident, leaving me with a broken wrist and her with worse. Bones will heal, and the question regarding which phone remains essentially the same, and my feelings now are a function of my challenges today and might be different a couple of months from now when things are closer to normal (at least for me, physically). But I find myself leaning the other way now. I see the choice as one of putting up with something slightly worse (bigger and heavier) that affects my use all the time, in exchange for something significantly better (telephoto) that affects my use sometimes. I think I was more willing to make that trade before, but I feel less likely to now. Perhaps I now don't want to put up with the extra weight? Or perhaps I'm now valuing the better experience using the phone all the time over the better camera experience occasionally? I don't know specifically why. But I can sense some measure of relief when I consider choosing the mini over the Pro, without any change in my evaluation of the individual factors. Now suddenly it is the mini that feels "right."

Life, am I right?

Hope you have speedy recovery.
