Hi, The hard drive for my Power Book G4 has died. Is there a way to use my WD External dive to re-boot my laptop.

Thank you

You should be able to run it off an external drive assuming the drive has a bootable os installed on it, hold down 'option' when you turn the PowerBook on and it'll display the available boot drives.

You can set it as default by going to System Preferences> Startup Disk, and selecting the external.

You'll need to connect it through FireWire.

This! As far as I have ever seen (and lord knows I've tried) the PB G4 can't boot from usb. But it can from firewire. I always keep a firewire drive around that has a small bootable partition on it for just such emergencies. You will loose portability if you choose this as a permanent option. Or at least it would be more inconvenient.

You can boot from USB. You just have to work it.
