I finished installing Mavericks and have noticed a behavior change for the power button. Where it used to bring up a shutdown, log off, sleep requestor now it appears to just drop to sleep. Is this normal/is this reversible?

It is normal.
CTRL + PowerButton or hold the PowerButton for 4-5 seconds to bring back the shutdown menu.

Ok. So what I am seeing is sleep mode then?

<ctrl><power> will take a little getting used to but certainly not a prober, thanks.

So, be exceedingly careful not to slip when you're furiously deleting lines of code. Soure: experience and frustration that I can't disable that damned button.
