Power from USB port? (rMBP)

I have just bought a Lite-on eTAU108-01 External CD/DVD drive for use with my rMPB. Although it doesn't display Mac compatibility on the box, my retailer said it would work, and I have read reviews of it working (although only on 2011 Mac Mini's).

When I plug it in, the light comes on, and the drive begins to spin up, however, the light then goes out and then nothing happens. It seems like when it spins up, the power drawn from the USB port becomes too much and the power cuts out?

Is there any settings I need to tweak to make this work or am I SOL?

There are many USB 3.0 issues going on with the new Macbook lineup. I have a Lacie 1TB USB 3.0 external hard drive and it doesn't seem to recognize it sometimes, it is completely random. So your not alone.

Turns out it does work, I was just looking for it to work like Windows, looking for it in Finder, but I now realise it doesn't do that till I put a disc in it!

I plugged it in and went to Disk Utility and it was showing up!

Ripping a CD with it now!

Just need to figure out how to rip and encode a DVD now!

I have Baracuda 2TB drives in Thermaltake 5G cases. Usb 3.0. SATA III.

I have had ZERO issues with the drives. Zero disconnects. They dont even impede the MAC startup process.
