:apple: MacBook Pro 17
Bought sometime in 2006

I need some help with a problem i am having with my macbook Pro 17. About a month ago my power adapter shorted right at the magsafe connector. I searched around until i found a oem apple power adapter(not aftermarket). When it arived i plugged it in and nothing. No power lights no nothing. So i did some research on google and see alot of cases where when the power adapter shorts it also takes out the left i/o board.

So i ordered a new i/o board. When that part finally arrived i installed it, put everything back together and...... Had a big ol puff of smoke when i pluged the adapter in. After looking over the i/o boards (after i pulled it back out) i am noticing differences now that were not real apparent when i got it. (Not just the big burn mark on the bottom of the one.) Some of the little black resistors are in different locations, and it has a different part number. So here is what i got.

original board:
Apple 820-2060-A Copyright 2006
New Board:
Apple 820-1970-A Copyright 2006

Both (now all three) power adapters are 85W

The newest one that caused the damage is the updated version.(cord exits out the back, not the side)

I also bought another one that was identical to the old one.(other than it seems like it works) I plugged it in just for S&G and it powered the computer but wouldn't charge it. (green light came on, then switched to orange but no charge) Didn't supprise me since the bottom of the i/o board was charcoal. This one will not power the computer with the original i/o board in it. I haven't tried the other power adapter in fear that i will have another smoke situation and fry something else.

Any help/Info you can give will be mucho apprectiated!

Thanks,
Derek
