I picked up another Mac because I don't know and when I booted it up it had the previous owner's stuff still on it and I was able to see other WiFi networks. I formatted the drive and reinstalled Leopard and the Airport card now can't see any WiFi networks even after installing the combo update. The external antenna is missing so it's not going to get a good signal but it should still be able to see networks. Has anyone come across this?

Nope! You need an antenna

It fixed itself, I can see my WiFi network now! The signal is too weak for a connection but it's now behaving as expected of an early G5 without an antenna that isn't too far from the router. Shame the antennas aren't cheaper...
