I recently bought a Brompton folding bike, and one of the things Brompton owners do is take their bike abroad, because it folds down into a neat rectangle with roughly the same dimensions as a full-sized-but-not-server-sized PC tower case.

One of the most popular suggestions on the internet for keeping within airline luggage limits is the Ikea DIMPA bag, which is just the right size for a Brompton plus padding:

That got me to thinking. Will my G5 fit? So like all men who dream during the day I tried it out, and lo and behold it will, with space to roll some packing material around it:

This is a game-changer. The G5 can be turned into a portable machine after all! In theory it fits the spec for British Airways' hand luggage. If it fell out and hit the passenger sitting across the aisle from me they would feel no pain.

After spending an inordinate amount of time trying to get the G5 inside the bag I might at some point even try to lift it. On a more serious note, if you're moving house and you need to transport a G5 or Mac Pro without getting it scratched a DIMPA bag will cover the whole thing, nb the bag isn't watertight.

I wonder if any well-heeled graphic designers / DJs / musicians etc actually did take their G5s with them abroad back when the G5 was a thing?

To be honest, you would need a more solid bag for that unwieldy G5 or it's almost certainly going to get a bash or two getting in and out of that plane. I wouldn't want to have to haul it out of the overhead locker either, especially not in that loose nylon bag.
