So I fixed my Wsod issue with my 3GS which turned out to be the screen digitiser so bought new glass at same time, shiny yay 
Now the original issue with the phone was that it turned off whenever it was locked and could only be powered on again when it was plugged in. I've figured out that I can turn it back on without the charger by using home and power button.
What hardware fault could this be? I've done various restarts and dfu modes to no avail
