Do you have power point on your computer? If not you will need to get some Office Suite that will open the power point file.

If I am not mistaken when I got a pps file and clicked or double clicked on it that it opened in "keynote". Does that sound plausible? I don't get them type files too often but I am pretty sure that they opened in keynote. Is that possible?

Keynote is a type of presentation software. It should be able to open power point presentations. Also to open the video file, download it to your computer and then double-click on it. It should open up quicktime and play the file.
