I just got my powerbook a few days ago, and the Combo drive "beeps" every once and a while, and sounds like it is accessing information even when no CD/DVD is in the drive.

The sound is just barely noticeable, but it can definitely be heard when I put my ear near the right side. I've tried putting a DVD or a CD in the drive, and the noise is different (of course, its actually accessing information), so its much quieter when no disk is in, but I was just wondering if this is normal with the AlBooks or if it is some issue with mine...

Once again, the sound is different from the normal noise made by the drive when a disk is in...much quieter, but louder than when the computer is asleep or off...

Thanks.

I think that the noise you are hearing is actually the hard drive. It happened to me too, but I slowly stopped noticing it. I think it actually went away with some system updates or something... or maybe i just don't notice it anymore! What version of OS X are you running?
