Hello gurus!

I just got a new 1 gig ram chip to add to the second slot of my Powerbook g4 17 inch laptop. I already had a 512 chip in there so I thought that with my new addition I would have 1.5 gigs of RAM - but I noticed that now my computer only reports 1 gig. Any ideas why only half of my new ram is noticed? Is it not recognizing my old card?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Uh oh... sounds like lower memory bank going out issue.. either that or your ram is not compatible?

hum - perhaps it is this problem - but it is recognizing some of my new memory! I have a 512 and a 1 gig chip. The 1 gig chip was put in the lower slot. Now I have 1 gig of reported ram - is it possible that there is a partial failure?

thanks

I doubt that its only seeing half of your new RAM. It's more likely that its just not seeing your old RAM. Which RAM slot is the old one in. If it's the bottom one, then it sounds like that slot is faulty.

My guess is your new RAM uses high-density chips which it doesn't support, and so the PowerBook is only reading half of it.

If I'm correct, the profiler should show two banks of 512 MB. If this is so, try returning your RAM, and buying a GB stick from OWC for your PowerBook.
