My PowerBook G4, with a 3rd-party DVD drive, will read CD's, but won't read DVD's, with the message 'disc cannot be read by this computer'. DVD's used to work, even after the new drive, but for around 1 month hasn't been playing DVD's ie. films etc. It will however, acknowledge blank DVD's but no type of DVD, made on the computer or any other burning device, even commercial DVD's. Burning DVD's and Cd's still works.
This is what system profiler says about the drive:
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K04L:
Firmware Revision: 1.00
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2000 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media:
Media Type: DVD-ROM
Blank: No
Erasable: No
Overwritable: No
Appendable: No
In the drive at the time is a region 2, proper dvd of Finding Nemo.
Any ideas?
The drive is an MCE 8x DVD+RW/DL, which replaced the internal combo drive around '04/'05.
The mac is running OSX 10.4 and the only drivers that came with the drive were for burning compatibility in 10.2 and below.
Any help is very much appreciated.
Update: I booted the computer into safe mode and the dvd mounted, however even in VLC i couldn't get any picture (although i dont think OSX booted the video codecs). The disc doesnt even mount in normal mode.
My laptop won't boot from a disk, whether by pressing c,d, or ctrl-opt-shift-backspace (the laptop doesnt have a delete button), the last one brings up a smiley mac face and a ? mark???
Please help.
Should i think about reinstalling OSX 10.4?
