So I just picked up a powerbook g4 12" 1.5 for a notetaking/work/travel computer, and it's all good, but I had a quick question about the superdrive- aside from needing to reinstall leopard, I don't think I ever need it. this may be a stupid question, but if I take out the superdrive, will that give me more battery life and make the computer lighter?

It'll make the computer lighter, but it will not give you more battery life. The superdrive uses no power when it isn't being used.

Won't get you much better battery life unless you are leaving a disc in there all the time. The solution for that is to not leave a disc in it.

It'll make the computer slightly lighter, but I'm not sure it's worth the effort.
