This has happened about three times, but I'll have my PowerBook running on battery and sometimes if I bump it the machine shuts off. Is the battery loose?

Sounds like it could be the battery. If you can easily replicate the problem though, perhaps try bumping it while it's plugged in to see if it's not something with the logic board?

Could be battery, I dunno if it is possible to put couple layers of paper or something between the battery and the case to create pressure. It could also be some component on the motherboard being loose.

EDIT: Could also be a cable, like display cable which has weakened, probably the surface of it broken and once bumped it makes a kind of contact it should not make.

It doesn't shut off when plugged in, so maybe it is the battery. I am having problems with the latch..
