Hello

My friend's old PowerBook G4 was working fine until a couple of days ago when she tried tried to turn it on but it won't boot.

No lights are coming on and I can't hear the fan or anything. The only thing that works is the caps lock light (weird).

Any ideas at all?

Thanks in advance!

Does anyone know what's going on here that causes this fix to work? Is the ram just getting unseated or is there something actually happening when you remove the ram and put it back in?

It is usually the pins on the RAM stick not making enough contact with pins on the RAM slots. Old school experience, rub it with a rubber eraser or rather clean it with contact cleaner or alcohol.
