Powerbook Line-In Monitoring problem

Hey

I'm trying to record into cuabase SX using the line-in port on my G4 powerbook (OSX). I get an input signal, but i can't monitor the sound on headphones or through the built in speaker.

any ideas?

there is a thru switch in audio midi setup, but its greyed out and i can't tick it.

I'm stumped (mostly cos i was stoutly a pc user till about a month ago. heh heh)
