It appears that I can't take a seat on the Front Row with my PowerBook:

Front Row requires a Mac with built-in IR and an Apple Remote.

(source: Leopard tech specs)

I recall Steve telling the world that people who didn't have Tiger Front Row enabled Macs would be able to use Front Row on Leopard. This quote contradicts this.

Two questions:
  1. Will I be able to call up Front Row on my non-IR, no-remote PowrBook using Option-Escape like it would on Tiger Macs with Front Row?
  2. Is there an external IR solution that allows me to use the Apple remote without too much hassle?

1.Yes, command-escape should work. As for the requirements, I'm sure there will be a way to hack the installer.

2. No idea.

Ah, command escape. Still, if the installer would need to be cracked, mr Jobs didn't keep his promise. Front Row was one of the yaypoints for me :)
