I have an old PowerBook G4 that my son uses for simple stuff. One day the screen went dark gray (not powered off) and it won't boot. When I try to boot from a Tiger disk, I get what appears to be a kernel panic. I don't get any strange startup beeps.

Any ideas on what to check out? What other information is needed for troubleshooting?

Thanks!

It is possible that it isn't liking or properly seeing the memory, and or some other hardware error. Try removing, blowing out the dust, and putting the memory back into the system.

You may also want to do this with the Airport card (if you have one that is removable), or any other component inside the system. Also, check to ensure that you don't have CPU fans that are too dusty, and that properly spin. G4 systems are old enough now, that dust can start to plague the internal components, and cause overheating / poor contacts.
