Am in the UK and have been looking around at getting a powerbook. I've been told that the powerbooks will be upgraded soon. Does anyone know when exactly? And what sort of upgrade is expected? (on the 12" SuperDrive model)?

Cheers!

The powerbooks are rumoured to be having updates, expected to be announced on the 20th Sept at the Paris Expo. :)

Yeah just wait up til the paris expo to see what happens. Also if you CAN wait, the next update will probably have the intel CPUs that apple is migrating to.

That being said, these new G4s are supposed to be new freescale chips w/ a meg of cache instead of 512k, DDR2 support, and even lower power usage. So this last round of G4s really could be a great one from what it sounds like.

Yes indeed, the next revision of PowerBook G4's are going to be some pretty awesome machines.

Likewise, I'm interested to see what happens at Expo later this month. I'm certainly not switching before then.

Good decision. Those new PBs should have much better battery life due to lower power usage of the chips.

It sounds this might be one of the better revisions that PBs have had in a while.

I hope the Powerbook line get a big update, I have $3,500 to blow and its either going to be upgrading from my Olympus E-20 to a new EOS-20D setup (camera, lenses, 2x2GB Extreme III cards, flash etc) or a new Powerbook to update my antiquated 1Ghz P3 windows laptop. I also hope that the upgrades not going to be a flimsy 30Mhz upgrade to 1.7Ghz and that’s it.

I hope not, by the way where is that information?
Nothing other than no Keynote presenation.... mmmm

Not what I really wanted to hear. I'll wait until after Expo though, it may be that there is a minor upgrade to the PBs - who knows!

Now that we are so close to the Expo it makes sense to hold off on purchasing a PowerBook for just a little longer.

That there's no keynote doesn't mean there won't be any updates. The updates that have been rumoured to be in the pipeline were fairly minor really anyway.

I think you can safely count on no G5 powerbook happening now.

True, I believe new PowerBook G4 updates are a guaranteed thing- keynote or no keynote.

Darn it, I wanted a PowerBook G5 so badly! ;)

I'd be laughing my head off if a low power G5 PB came out but that I doubt, also dual core G4's I doubt.. I wonder if it’s going to be a 1.7Ghz low power G4 and the battery life would be between 6-7 maybe 8 hours. A high def screen would be nice and a possibility.
