Powerbook won't go into standby

I can't seem to get my powerbook to standby when the screen is closed.

I've tried resetting the NVRAM, PRAM and PMU, still no standby.

I run my powerbook with an external DVI monitor, spanned.

I've also tried re-installing from scratch (Blank hard drive) and it still won't standby.

Anyone?

Its a Powerbook (Aluminium) g4 1ghz with 1gb ram (FW800).

The only external USB/Firewire devices are a USB2 hard drive, iPod on the firewire bus and a MS mouse.

Although unplugging these devices doesn't help at all.
