I have a 30Gb ATA drive salvaged from a G4 iBook. I have a USB to IDE/ATA adapter that allows the drive to function as an external HDD. Connected to the adapter, the drive is powered by the USB (2.0) and works great on my MacBook. I also have a clamshell and I would like to use this drive as an external drive on that machine (to keep a portable iTunes library on it, more space and a heck of alot quieter than the original drive on the clamshell). Of course the clamshell only has a USB1.0 (or maybe 1.1) port. When I attached the drive, it occasionally mounts an icon to the desktop, but the drive itself keeps clicking and whirring, as if it isn't getting the power it needs. No surprise. Even if the icon is on the desktop, I have never been able to access the drive. My question is this: if I get a powered USB 2.0 hub, might the drive get sufficient power from the port and thereby be workable (though slow) hooked into the USB 1.0 port?
